What should I wear while going job hunting?

I'm going to the mall today to pick up and fill out job applications at retail stores. I'm not going in for any interviews so does it matter if I look really nice or not? Obviously I'm not going to wear something really sloppy or dumb, but should i dress as if I'm going in for an interview?
