Is it shallow to not listen to artists because you dont know about them?

seriously, isnt that the point of music? finding more artists to listen to. well an associate i used to have told me he couldnt listen to Anders Manga, Sia or Santogold because he didnt know about them. im talking about music here. as it turns out, all he listens to Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Kesha and all other mainstream pop acts there are. its his taste to listen to those artists, but i just think its shallow to not listen to an artist just because you dont know them. note: he never heard anders manga, sia or santogold.
