.300 Win Mag, is it too much?

I look forward to going on my first hunt ever later this year. I've come to the conclusion that I want to hunt coyotes. I'm not entirely sure why, but that's what I want to take first. My question is would a .300 Win Mag be too much? Tips for my first hunt would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
